Lift up Your Paintbrushes! Social Justice Art Gallery So maybe you're not a politics major, studying law or international relations, but you still care about human rights and you still want to do something.
Send out emails, phone mails, put up posters, hand out flyers, do whatever you have to do to get the word out. You'll want to create applications for artists to describe their pieces once it gets closer to the date. This will help you know how much space to reserve per piece, as well as totally, and give you an idea of how you can best display them (paintings and photographs vs. freestanding pieces) and the materials you will need to display them with. Get creative in your displays, have fun with it. You may want to incorporate different fabrics behind pieces, have chairs and sitting areas around your display for people to sit and reflect, and have snacks and drinks out. Food and good art always attract people. When reserving a space for your gallery, make sure that it is an area with a lot of foot traffic- a student union building, in one of the academic halls, a library, etc... The gallery should last a few days to give time for people to talk about it and bring their friends. You may want to make up art gallery guides that tell a little about each artist, art piece and what it depicts. While some artists may choose to sell their pieces to raise money in support of a particular cause, most will probably want to hang on to their work. So, you may want to make prints of the gallery pieces to sell for a dollar or so to raise money for your cause. Also, don't forget to set up a donation jar! Spare change to make a change!
