Statistics with a Face, Statistics with a Force Apply a statistic for a human rights issue (1/16 kids die of AIDS in Africa, etc...) to your student body/ community population. Have a contest for people to design a t-shirt representing your issue, keeping in mind that brightly colored shirts with simple, clear messages are most effective. The idea is to get your message across, not confuse people.
Put up posters, send out emails, make announcements, leave voicemails, etc… presenting the importance of your particular human rights issue and what people can do about it. Promotion is key, start promoting a week to 2 weeks before your demonstration. Meet with volunteers the night before the demonstration to make sure they are all informed on the issue. Have appropriate ratio of volunteers wear the shirts all day, on the same day. Now you’ve got the attention of the people, they see you and they see the issue.
Now what? You owe it to them to give them an outlet to act. Have an event planned for that night where people can be further informed on the issue and where you present a way for them to act- through donating money, getting involved in organizing a fundraiser, signing up to sponsor a child, starting a letter writing campaign to local and federal government officials (these are very effective), etc... If it is a local human rights issue - like hunger, homelessness, crisis pregnancies, etc… - recruit them to volunteer at local soup kitchens, missions, and care centers. If an international issue, get them to sign up for a mission trip through your college or through a missions organization like Operation Mobilization, Global Challenge, or one that you research on your own. Never be afraid to call an organization and request a missions trip – everyone needs help! Also, check out our volunteer page for ideas!
