Bands Wanted. Justice Wanted.

JESUSpolitik - Sumatra musiciansPeople love music. Ipods and zunes are great, sure, but live music is always better. So why not use music as a way to raise awareness and raise money to help other people?

Put flyers up all over your campus and in your community to seek out bands for the event. It can be a great way for local bands to attract new fans and use their music to do something worthwhile. Myspace music sites are also a simple way to contact local talent.

A lot of bands are willing to do benefit concerts if they are allowed to also have a merchandise table (posters, shirts, hats, CDs, etc…) set up. Remember, bands need money too!

JESUSpolitik - Bora native drummer, ColumbiaIt’s always great to take advantage of free space on campus to hold the event but if you find you may need to hold it elsewhere, try and work out some kind of co-sponsorship with local restaurants for the event. Remind them that not only would the concert provide good publicity for them in the human rights end of things, but it also would provide them with a larger customer base.

In-between band acts, have the MC remind the audience about the human rights abuse issue that you all are raising money to try and put an end to. Show a short PowerPoint slide or documentary clip telling about the issue in between acts as well.

Also, be sure to have a table with plenty of information and pamphlets. Do a drawing for an audience member to win merchandise prize(s) from the bands. Donate all ticket sales to the cause. And it never hurts to put out a donation jar as well!
