Wherever we go, whether it's to speak at a punk rock concert or at a Bible college's missions fair the first response we get from most people when we ask people their talent is "I don't have any!"
Getting
involved with JESUSpolitik and being used by God "...
is not about being super spiritual, overly talented or
smart. It's about a feeling in your heart...you want to make
a difference and you act on it," as Melissa Davis,
founder of JESUSpolitik says.
Find out what are people already interested in - anything from making jewelry to running marathons, from hiking up mountains to teaching Sunday School, from playing harmonica to playing basketball... there is something everybody can do.
We understand that students have gotten worn out by organizations that they are only generally important to - where they are expected to buy a product, make a donation, raise awareness, and that's it.
JESUSpolitik wants to refresh embittered students with creative ways that they can use their individual and specific talents to actively change the hard situations being faced by people in this world - not to be limited to just raise awareness, but to resurrect activism. To actually DO SOMETHING!
A
good way to begin finding people's talents is to have a
mini-documentary showing. If you don't already have the DVD,
we can get one to you.
Play the documentary and then lead an open forum discussion. Remind people that being used by God always begins the same way - using what you've got and giving it to God. Ask students what are some talents, interests, hobbies that God has given them?
Proverbs 3:6 says to “Acknowledge God in all your ways and He will direct your paths.” You may want to ask them what are some areas of their lives that they are or that they need to be acknowledging God in? Relationships/ friendships / connections? Talents / hobbies /interests?
Ask how they are using their time? Would they be willing to creatively use these areas to help the street kids being reached by the Love Maputo Project that they just saw in the mini documentary?
Pass around a SIGNUP SHEET with a place for NAME, CONTACT (myspace, facebook, email), and TALENTS to be listed. Assure audience that we do not mass email and that they will be receiving a personal email in response only to the talents that they have listed. Even if they don’t have any idea of how their talents can be used, have them write those talents and interests down as a step of faith. We have LOTS of ideas!
Email us their info or sent it to us in the post at: JESUSpolitik P.O. Box 177 Bryans Road, MD 20616
Also, be sure to please encourage people to write legibly, otherwise we can’t contact them!
Are you a people-person?
