Running
is such a great way to clear your mind and get alone with
God. There are few things more peaceful than a run early in
the morning, while everything is still quiet and the dew is
still on the grass. To a runner, there's nothing better than
that.
Are you on a track team or do you have any other friends who run? It would be really neat to put on a small marathon in your community, at your college, or for your church as a fundraiser for the Love Maputo Project.
People that run anyways can get involved as well as those that just want to get fit and help someone else while doing it.
Here are some good questions to ask when planning a marathon:
When would be a good time for that (take into consideration other coinciding events, schedules, holidays and the general weather)?
Is there an outdoor track or trail that could be reserved?
Are there any special groups that would help sponsor it?
Don't forget to advertise plenty in advance, with emails, phonemails, posters and a public signup sheet.
Charge either a small entry fee or have each runner collect donations for how many miles they'll run ($3 a mile, something like that). Have each runner set a personal goal for how much they'll raise in support for the marathon.
You may also be able to get corporate sponsorship or sponsorship from a specific dept of your school, if they know it's bringing students together for a good cause.
Take lots of pictures and maybe even some video of the event. We'd love to use your marathon as an activism story on here to get more people fired up and DOING something with their talents!
Running & Marathons
Why not take what you love and are already doing and use it as a way that you can help people?
Running is how a lot of us relax, get fit, charge up, blow off steam.... you name it.
It's also a great way that you can get people plugged in to helping meet needs in the Body of Christ overseas at the same time.
